AVID Elementary Overview

AVID Elementary equips students in PreK–6 with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. It supports high-quality instruction, fosters a college- and career-ready culture, and helps close opportunity gaps by promoting student agency and academic rigor.

Through intentional professional learning and support, AVID helps educators create consistent, engaging learning experiences that prepare students to thrive in school and beyond.

When AVID implementation reaches the greatest levels of depth and scope, it becomes a driver for system-wide change and improvement across a campus. Essential skills are prioritized across all grade levels, and AVID’s College and Career Readiness Framework, along with its philosophy of rigor with support, spurs changes in how schools approach teaching and learning. This transformation helps unify various efforts on the campus, ensuring a cohesive and supportive environment for all students.

How AVID Elementary Supports Student Success

AVID Elementary provides structured instructional strategies that create consistency across grade levels and classrooms. This ensures all students experience high expectations, critical thinking, and collaboration from an early age.

AVID Elementary helps students develop a college- and career-ready mindset by exposing them to future pathways. This encourages students to set academic goals and develop aspirations for success.

Through goal-setting, organization, and self-advocacy, AVID Elementary nurtures student agency. This increases engagement and empowers learners to take ownership of their education.

The program focuses on developing essential study skills and inquiry-based learning strategies. This helps students manage their workload effectively and creates a seamless transition into middle and high school.

AVID Elementary encourages family and community involvement in the educational process. By providing opportunities for families to engage and support their children's education, AVID helps build a strong network of support for students.

How AVID Elementary Works

AVID Elementary provides structured strategies that strengthen teaching and learning campus-wide. Trained teachers use WICOR® (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) to design lessons that promote higher-level thinking and lifelong learning skills. These practices are aligned both within and across grade levels to create a cohesive learning journey.

Professional development through AVID supports teachers in refining their instructional practices and aligning them with school and district goals. Educators work collaboratively to ensure that students develop essential skills, such as organization, goal-setting, and self-advocacy.

Schools can start with a small team—just four teachers participating in three days of training—or implement AVID across an entire grade level or campus.

Getting Started

Each school is unique. Whether beginning with one grade or working toward schoolwide change, AVID meets schools where they are and provides the support to help them grow.

With AVID Elementary, students gain the skills, mindset, and support they need to succeed in school—and beyond.
