AVID Secondary Overview

AVID Secondary is a comprehensive program for grades 6–12 that bridges the gap between students’ aspirations and their readiness for college and careers. At its core is the AVID Elective, a daily class that builds academic skills, college and career knowledge, and student agency. Districts can choose how many Elective classes to offer and which grade levels to start with. Middle schools may also offer AVID Excel® to support multilingual learners.

Beyond the Elective, AVID strategies are integrated schoolwide. Teachers receive training to implement research-based practices that boost student engagement and achievement. As AVID expands, it fosters a culture of rigor and support across all classrooms.

When fully implemented, AVID drives systemic change, aligning teaching practices with the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework. This transformation creates a unified, student-centered learning environment.

The AVID Elective: Core Support for Student Success

The AVID Elective is central to the AVID College and Career Readiness System, supporting motivated students in the academic middle. Offered during the school day for grades 6–12, the class builds essential skills in organization, writing, and critical thinking, while preparing students for advanced coursework. Weekly tutorials with trained tutors help deepen understanding of challenging subjects. Students also explore college and career pathways, setting goals and planning for the future. As part of a broader schoolwide approach, the AVID Elective empowers students to take ownership of their learning and thrive in rigorous academic environments.
